COMMISSIONING THE TWIN BRIGANTINES
The Twin Brigantines were officially commissioned on March 28, 2003, during a ceremony held at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. The event marked the beginning of a new era for the Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI), and the completion of a three year construction effort to build two state-of-the-art sail training vessels for the Institute's TopSail Youth Program.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn, City Councilwoman Janice Hahn (both San Pedro residents), Port of L.A. Board President Nicholas Tonsich, POLA Commissioner Camilla Townsend Kocol, Museum Director Dr. William "Pete" Lee (retired) and a number of crew and guests from the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, the general public and the news media.

Speeches were made, the vessels were given a traditional "blessing," and the Mayor and Coucilwoman raised the City's flag to the top of the mast. Though both brigantines were commissioned, interior work remained to be done on Exy Johnson. Irving had the honor of welcoming the Mayor and guests, and took many of them on a brief cruise following the ceremony.
