A VOLUNTEER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION
The Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) uses sail training
to provide youth with real life challenges that develop knowledge,
skills and attitudes needed to live healthy, productive lives.
about the institute
Founded in 1992 by retired science teacher Captain
Jim Gladson, the non-profit Institute is the privately-funded education
affiliate of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, Department of Recreation
and Parks, City of Los Angeles.

topSail youth program
TopSail is an education and adventure experience
aboard a large sailing vessel. The first half of the program typically
consists of a series of one-day sails in and around the Los Angels
- Long Beach harbors scheduled over a period of several months.
Skills gained include problem solving, decision making, planning,
self-reliance and leadership. Find out MORE.
The LAMI Fleet
In addition to the Twin Brigantines Irving Johnson
and Exy Johnson, the Institute operates two schooners -
the 70 foot Swift of Ipswich and the 95 foot Bill of
Rights.
VOLUNTEERS ARE WELCOME
LAMI welcomes the skills and enthusiasm of people of all ages and
from all walks of life to sail with kids, maintain the tall ships
and to help in many other ways. There is no membership fee or experience
required. Volunteer information meetings are held monthly.
