TopSail YOUTH PROGRAM
TopSail is an education and adventure experience aboard a large sailing vessel. The program enriches conventional school curricula by bringing biology, mathematics, physics, geography, history, literature and the environment to life in the real world classroom of the sea.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The first half of the program typically consists of a series of one-day sails in and around the Los Angeles-Long Beach harbors. Each day's activity builds on the skills and knowledge gained before. Participants are then given an opportunity to utilize their new found sense of empowerment and team work during a multi-day voyage to Catalina Island. The youth sleep aboard ship, plan and prepare all the meals, and plan their activities for each day.

MORE THAN "JUST A BOAT RIDE"
The shipboard environment is challenging, yet nurturing - encouraging exploration and self-reliance. It is notably effective with youth who are not coping well with the demands of society and are at risk of dropping out of school and giving up.

TopSail does not train youth for lives at sea. It uses the sea to educate youth for life.

TopSail is an educational venue rich in potential for the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are difficult to teach in a traditional classroom.
